Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageFragrantEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerant

Solid Gold is a giant Alocasia, easily growing to 6 ft high in good tropical conditions. It has glossy emerald green leaves up to 1 metre long held stiffly upwards, with prominent yellow veining on the underside of the leaves.
The striking and spectacular aspect of this plant is, of course, the buttercup yellow stems and veins on the undersides of the leaves. It is a bright and obvious yellow, not just a pale green or lemon color. The more light the plants receive, the brighter the stem and the darker the leaf will be. The stems of young plants are a lighter, greenish color until they get a few leaves; as they get older, the yellow color becomes more prominent.
This is a fast growing Alocasia and in good conditions. It grows larger in the ground than in pots - Alocasias seem to need a lot of room for their roots to get the huge leaves.

One of the most desirable symbols of Tropics, Alpinia purpurata, red ginger, also called ostrich plume and pink cone ginger, are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly colored red bracts. They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower on top. Red Ginger grows in Hawaii, and many Central American nations, including Belize. It is also found in Samoa, where it is the national flower, and is locally called "teuila." It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates. It tends to like to be well watered and not left to dry out. Ginger can also be grown as a houseplant and its cut flowers can be used in arrangements.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

var. 48-26), Hybrid Custard Apple.
Atemoya is much hardier than common Sugar Apple, and at the same time can tolerate tropical heat unlike Cherimola which requires cooler summers. It makes Atemoya an excellent choice for subtropical and tropical garden. Can tolerate light freeze. The tree growing to about twenty-five feet at maturity with about the same spread. Atemoyas have fewer seeds than Sugar Apple, which makes them a lot easier to eat as a fresh fruit.

Bambusa guangxiensis - Chinese Dwarf Bamboo

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunKeep soil moistSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Chinese Dwarf is a hedging clumping bamboo that grows to roughly 10 ft in height, but can get taller in good conditions - you simply hedge it to the size you want! It grows very differently from traditional bamboo, with a very bushy, tufting habit with its foliage and does not naturally show the culms. Chinese Dwarf has quite pretty, large green leaves and gives a very tropical feel instead of a normal hedge. Chinese Dwarf is an extremely fast growing, hardy bamboo, and can achieve a privacy hedge in under 18 months! You need to trim Chinese Dwarf down between 1-4 times a year to maintain at the ideal height and to promote new fresh foliage. Chinese Dwarf is definitely a fantastic privacy hedge, sound barrier and wind break. Hedge it down to any preferred height and even clean out the below foliage to create a japanese style effect. Chinese Dwarf can be grown in full sun to part shade. Trim back as much as you desire to maintain size and promote new foliage. Chinese Dwarf is a great option for pots or troughs.

This bamboo is commonly found in tropical regions and in the United States does very well in Southern California and Florida. Blighia sapida - Akee

Big tree > 20 ftFull sunModerate waterAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Akee - rare fruit tree, hard to find National fruit of Jamaica. Delicious when fried! This showy fruit is a close relative of Lychee, Longan, and Rambutan. The tree is easy in cultivation, fast growing and can be maintained compact. I it is not bugsy or picky about soil/water conditions, and is relatively cold tolerant for being a tropical tree. You can find delicious akee meals only in Jamaican restaurants. But no need to search for it - grow your own tree, it can't be easier. It will start fruiting for you the next season, you don't have to wait long. Sometimes it fruits twice a year! However remember, the fruit is used as a vegetable, and is not eaten raw. It must be picked AT THE RIGHT TIME after the fruit has opened naturally so the flesh is fully exposed to light, otherwise it is poisonous. When the fruit has "yawned", discard the seeds (or better plant them to grow more trees - to share with your friends!). The arils, while still fresh and firm, are best parboiled in salted water or milk and then lightly fried in butter. Then they are really delicious. Just add Bacon to complete your meal! Somewhat cold-hardy once established.

Bougainvillea Dwarf Pixie

Can be used for bonsaiSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunModerate waterPink flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Bougainvillea Sunvillea Rose (also called Dwarf Pixie) is deep pink, almost a magenta in color. It blooms the brightest of fuchsia-pink bracts contrasting with its bright green foliage. If you're looking for a pick-me-up for your container gardens, or a dull space in the landscape, here's your winner!
It is a dwarf form of thornless Bougainvillea with extremely slow growth rate. These showy evergreen dwarf beauties have numerous bright colorful bracts growing in an upright habit. This plant flowers in a small as a 4" pot and is great for landscapes and patio containers. It has a shape of natural bonsai, and leaves are smaller. Bright flowers are born in dense clusters. 3-4 y.o. plants can stay only 3-4 ft and look like natural bonsai trees. They stay compact, perfectly round and dense shape, don't require pruning, making a must-have for any garden, especially for the small spaces in your yard.
