Alternanthera ficoidea - var. True Yellow (Chartreuse)

Groundcover and low-growing 2ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterOrnamental foliageSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Chartreuse Josephs Coat. Attractive glossy narrow leaves emerge chartreuse in spring, turning yellow in color the rest of the year. A mounding, dense plant presenting cupped and crinkled bright yellow leaves; small white flowers in summer; best color in full sun; great in containers. This plant does best in full sun to shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. Foliage color is most vivid in sun, colorful attractive foliage, shade-tolerant, low maintenance.
Alternantheras are grown exclusively for their colorful foliage. Spreading foliage mounds to 12-30" tall. Common names are all in reference to the often brilliantly colored leaves which provide foliage contrast to gardens and container plantings. Best foliage colors are developed in full sun. May also be grown indoors as a houseplant. Pinching stems or shearing will keep plants compact and bushy.

Billbergia windii (nutans) - Bromeliad Queen of Tears, Friendship Plant

Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeEpiphytePink flowersUnusual colorOrnamental foliageAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Friendship Plant. This Bromeliad is one of the easiest to grow indoors, and one of the most striking. Its thick, strap-like leaves grow into an upright rosette, creating an urn that must be filled with water at all times. As the plant matures, the leaves arch outward, lending a graceful appearance. The foliage can reach up to 15 inches tall and about twice as wide, so give this plant some room to spread out. The flowers are pink, purple, yellow or green and are surrounded by red or pink bracts. One of its common names Queen's Tears comes from the drops of nectar that "weep" from the flowers when the plant is moved or touched. Because it readily produces offsets that can be shared with friends, it is also commonly known as Friendship Plant.

Almost ever-blooming, this shrub looks much like a hibiscus (to which it is closely related) which flowers are ready to open. In fact, the flowers never open much, hence the common name of Sleepy Hibiscus. It blooms often, and the flowers attract hummingbirds. The 2 inch long tubular flowers appear to be constructed of crimson crepe paper as they nod against the large oval leaves. Can be kept compact shape and is good for container culture and bonsai.

Mangifera indica - Tara Lay (Taralay), Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Tara Lay is a brand new variety just released! It's a Julie seedling, with an Indochinese flavor. The tree is of moderate vigor and a very heavy producer, fruits in Mid-Late season. The 12-20 oz fruit has no fiber and ripens with a reddish-yellow blush. The taste is mildly sweet with a fresh sugarcane flavor.
The story behind this mango is, this tree was planted in a community called Tara Estates and a hurricane had knocked the tree over to lay on its side... and the tree still produced fruit!
This mango had a very interesting kidney shape with a side beak on the bottom. When you cut the mango open it reveals a golden yellow flesh and gushes some thin juice. The flesh is fiberless and juicy with a slippery smooth consistency. The seed is monoembryonic.

White Cheesewood (Melodorum fruticosum) is the symbol flower and tree of Sisaket province (Thailand). Very fragrant flowers of unusual shape. It is very similar to Mitrephora - a rare fragrant plant from Thailand close related to Ylang-Ylang. The fragrance is very strong, plus the flowers are much more showy than those of Ylang-Ylang - they change color from pinkish-white to yellow with age. Grows as a compact tree and can be a nice potted specimen. The plants are not too cold sensitive, and tolerate light frost - about the same cold sensitivity as Cananga odorata. Dried flower has medicinal use: tonic, mild cardiac stimulant, hematinic.

Tetrastigma voinierianum - Chestnut Vine

Vine or creeperShadeSemi-shadeRegular water

Chestnut Vine, Lizard Plant, Giant Grape Ivy or Wild Grape. Ultimate Tropical Liana for indoors or Southern garden. It is an impressive, fast-growing tropical-looking liana displaying very large, five-lobed leaves that look similar to those of chestnut leaves. Beautiful centerpiece for a well-lit conservatory, sun porch or greenhouse with a steady, comfortable temperature and a high level of humidity.
If you want to bring exotic tropics into the house, growing chestnut vine indoors may be just the ticket! This plant is native to Laos. A rampant climber, chestnut vine may grow a foot or more in a month in ideal conditions. A vigorous climber with lush foliage and 8 inch or longer tendrils for climbing purposes, they are allowing the vine to wind its way up the trunks of trees. The underside of the leaves are clear pearl-like bumps, which are actually plant secretions that are used by ant colonies when grown in its wild habitat.
Chestnut vine is difficult to obtain for cultivation but it is well worth the effort! Indoors, this vigorous plant can quickly fill an entire room in the right conditions! Good care, pruning, and training can be useful in preventing it from overtaking your living space. The plant is safe at temperatures ranging from 55-85F. It likes lots of bright, indirect sunlight. Shelter the plant from direct sunlight. Water generously during the growing season and sparingly during the autumn and winter. Feed monthly during the growing season.
