What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

What is air-layered plant

Q: What is an air-layered plant?

Air-layering is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation woody ornamentals and fruit trees, when branches, while still attached to the parent plant, start producing roots where they come in contact with a rooting medium. Minimized water stress and stable nutrient levels make this method successful. Air-layering is used when grafting is not possible for a number of reasons.

Benefits of the air-layering:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a branch from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for the air-layered plant)
  • creates larger plant much faster unlike when growing from cuttings

Angie mango originated in South Florida. The flavor is classified in the Alphonso class of mangos with a deep sweetness and sophisticated profile rich in apricot. This variety is valuable due to its relatively small growth habit, rich and complex flavor, and good disease resistance. It was named after Angie Whitman, wife of Bill Whitman and a trustee of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Fruit is yellow to orange in color at maturity, and average about 1 lb. The fruit is oblong and saffron yellow with Indian orange blush on the sun-exposed shoulders. The skin is smooth and without visible lenticels. The flesh is tangerine orange and without fiber. The flavor is rich and sweet.
The trees are considered semi-dwarf and easy to manage through pruning. The disease tolerance is excellent and given its early season it often can be harvested before the rainy season in South Florida. The tree is semi-dwarf and highly manageable with annual pruning. Size can be maintained at or below 8 ft with consistent production.

Carrie Mango - the flavor is by far the most outstanding feature of this variety. It has absolutely no fiber and extremely rich in flavor, sweet, aromatic and a pure pleasure to eat. You will savor every mouthful! Its compact size makes it an excellent dooryard tree that requires minimal care. Both fruit and tree have little to no problem with fungus or disease. Lack of color and firmness are the only shortcomings of this superb variety. To determine where to pick, look for a subtle yellow color at its base. Do not let the fruit drop from a tree, or it will bruise since it's completely fiber-less. Many people agree that this is the best tasting mango in existence!

Mango Cogshall (Semi-Dwarf) is one the best variety for indoor potting culture! This variety is perfect for small yards or as 'condo mango' - an ultra compact grower. It has slow growth habit which makes it very easy to control its size with pruning. The tree is suitable for container growing on a balcony, or planting in a suburban backyard. It can easily be maintained at just eight feet tall, and it will still produce a good size crop year after year. The fruit is very colorful and has a mild, sweet flavor that appeals to many. It is also fungus resistant.

A traditional juice mango selected in Jamaica but not well known away from the Island. Common in markets in Jamaica and other parts of Caribbean. The fruit is oblong, with a smooth greenish to bright yellow skin, red blush on the shoulders, overlaid with large white dots and a heavy wax coating. 12-20 oz. The deep orange flesh is firm and juicy, with some fiber. Flavor is rich, aromatic, spicy, with distinctive tropical and coconut flavor notes. Very good for fresh juices.
Relatively cold hardy variety. See more info about Mango varieties.

The most outstanding feature of this variety is the perfect blend of sweetness and tartness thanks to its Indo-Chinese / Indian background. It is also firm, yet has no fiber. Another good trait is a long-lasting season. So, after many of the early varieties are gone, you will still be savoring the sweet tartness of this exceptional variety. It is easy to determine when to pick because the fruit will turn yellow at its base.

This mango is a cross of a Kent and Bombay and inherited the finest features of each variety: the large size and gorgeous yellow/red color of the Kent; and the excellent, exotic flavor of the Bombay. 'Jakarta' is a virtually fiberless selection of good eating quality and consistent production. When fully ripe the skin will turn deep orange to red and display numerous white dots. Consistent producer. To determine when to pick, look for yellowing on lower half of fruit. Relatively cold hardy variety.

This variety is a perfect choice for those with a small yard because it is a very compact, dwarf tree. This is the most popular variety in Jamaica and many other Caribbean islands because of its rich, sweet, coconut/pineapple-like flavor. To fully enjoy this unique tasting mango, it is best to eat on the same, or next day after it falls from the tree before it gets too ripe. In Florida it is sought after for its dwarf growing habit. Florida's humidity makes this tree a challenge to grow, however. Fungus problems which lead to twig die back are common, making fungicide applications necessary for success.
