Musa (Ensete) glaucum - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Ensete glaucum, the Snow Banana, is a larger version of the Abyssinian Banana but not so well known, sometimes called Musa nepalensis or Ensete giganteum, or Ensete wilsonii. It is native to China, Nepal, India, Burma, and Thailand up to 2600-8800ft. It has a thick, waxy and blue, solitary trunk with huge bluish leaves up to 10ft long. Massive, delicately ribbed leaves can grow three feet long in the first four months. The leaves of this beautiful variant are attractively shaded in grey when they achieve full size. A majestic plant to grow.
An extremely fast growing banana given heat, but not as hardy as Ensete ventricosum. Easy to raise from seed and very different with its swollen bulbous base and large leaves.
Banana sowing instructions: Abrade a side of each seed with a sand paper, then soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing 1/2" deep in a potting mix. Keep warm, between 70 and 85F and in a bright light. Germination can be erratic, usually taking between 2 to 12 months, sometimes longer, so do not discard the seed pots.

Musa - Banana Goldfinger

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Fruit is similar in taste and size of common Chiquita banana However, yields more than twice the amount of fruit. Very easy to grow. Must be checked often when close to ripening because of very subtle changes in color. Reaches heights of 10'-12'. Developed in Honduras. Very strong plant with stout base, rapid growing, mostly green leaves. Excellent tasting fruit, with a tart note that's almost citrusy, slightly sub-acid, refreshing, gets 6-8 inches long or better. Medium size plant with broad leaves is disease resistant, wind and cool tolerant and is easy to grow. Cold tolerant and disease resistant. Developed to be commercial export banana. Outstanding fruit production. It can support 100 lbs. of fruit without propping and produce a raceme in under a year. It is best ripened on the plant. The texture of the fruit at maturity is rather softer than Cavendish. Fruit will not turn brown when diced. It is good eaten fresh or used in cooking. Overall this variety takes longer to mature than most others but also seems the most cold tolerant. It produces good crops even in soils of marginal quality or areas of lower humidity. It is notably more resistant to rot in cold, wet winter soils but still needs rich, well drained soils in order to survive.

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Musa acuminata is a species of wild banana native to Southeast Asia. It is one of the parents of many of todays cultivars. It is the progenitor of modern edible bananas, along with Musa balbisiana. First cultivated by humans at around 8000 BC it is one of the earliest examples of domesticated plants. Musa acuminata is an evergreen perennial, not a tree. The trunk (known as the pseudostem) is made of tightly packed layers of leaf sheaths emerging from completely or partially buried corms. Although the fruit looks like an ordinary yellow banana and is edible it has seed within the fruit.
